Guido Frick returns to Amarillo in October!

   Guido Frick

Plein Air and Studio Oil Experience
Thursday – Saturday
October 4 – 6
Cost: Members – $500 Non-Members $550
Guido Frick is truly an outdoor painter. “It might sound overstated, but I really consider nature as my original studio. It is because of this belief, that I claim the whole American West as my own personal studio”. This German-born painter lives half of the year in Europe and travels the other half almost exclusively through America´s western states. In the early 1980´s he met with famous instructor and painter Sergei Bongart, and still considers this encounter as the most influential experience he has ever had as a painter. “Sergei truly opened my eyes and showed me the way”. By the 1970′s, Guido had already studied with Professor Karel Hodr from Prague, a well-respected impressionist painter and art teacher throughout Europe.

Soon Guido´s work was shown in exhibits in Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, and most recently in England. He was published in “Maler sehen den Bodensee”, and in 1980 he won the Prix de Salon in Fontainbleau-Paris. “As a painter I do not like to be labeled. I am always crossing the borderline between impressionism and expressionism. In art there should be no border, no fences, no stop sign. I want to paint free and generous and be independent …I love the outdoors, in nature.”

Cost:

Some things you will learn:

  • What must be done before you even start a painting
  • How to draw and paint accurately from your photos and life
  • How to accurately determine the relative proportion for ANY size painting, working from ANY size photo
  • How to crop your subject and create powerful compositions
  • How to use a camera and photography for paintings
  • How to color correct for poor lighting situations
  • Professional commercial art techniques for controlling your drawing quality and accuracy
  • The SEVEN Keys to critiquing your own work

A Systematic Painting Process:   You will learn about Mike’s DiVine Setup©, a 7-step systematic approach to painting based on classic principles of art which are logical, learnable, memorable, and which free the artist to be more spontaneous but in control of the painting. You will learn about how to plan your painting so that you can be confident that it is good at the beginning rather than waiting to the end to see if it “works.”

Life Drawing Studio is Here!

Wednesdays beginning May 2  6:30pm – 9pm
Figure drawing/life drawing studio has been created as many artists have shown interest.  This is an opportunity to work from a live professional model.  It is not a club, class or workshop.  There is no instructor present. It will be in a traditional academic format with gesture poses, several
20-minute poses and possibly 30-minute poses.
Figure drawing, also called Life Drawing, is drawing the human form. Figure drawing has always been the cornerstone of artistic training, but is also popular with amateur as well as professional artists. The human figure can express every aspect of humanity, however life class is not the place for ‘pushing boundaries’ or risque poses. So, when you attend a life drawing class, you are participating in a centuries-old artistic tradition. You might like to visit an art gallery and observe the many classical nudes in painting and sculpture before you attend your first life drawing class. A gallery here in Sunset Art Galleries of Amarillo that you can visit is chrisjohnsonfineart.com. The format of the life-drawing class will be with a model in several poses through the allotted class time.  $15 per artist per session ($50 per month when prepaid). This class will possibly meet during the spring and summer months. 16 student maximum.  Please contact Amarillo Art Institute at
806-354-8802 or director@amarilloartinstitute.org with any questions.

Matt Smith Award Winning Arizona Artist in June

 Award-winning Arizona Artist Matt Smith
Landscape Oil Workshop
June 11,12,13
Cost: Members – $500 Non-Members – $550
($100 deposit must be paid at registration to hold your spot in workshop)

Matt Smith was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1960.  At an early age he moved to  Arizona.  He later moved to Europe where he lived two years in France and one in Switzerland. In subsequent years, Smith painted in Germany, Austria and Italy.  Smith has lived most of his life in Arizona, where he has a deep attachment and respect for the Sonoran Desert. Smith graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting.  He spent a vast amount of time studying the traditional styles of such landscapes masters as Maynard Dixon, William Herbert Dunton and Edgar Payne.
Most of the time, Smith can be found painting en plein air from southern Arizona to the Canadian Rockies.  He also paints the California coast to the mountains of Colorado. “I appreciate traditional landscape painting and I am inspired by the pristine landscapes of the American West.  I enjoy working in areas where one can travel for miles without seeing the influence of man.  When I paint, I feel I’ve hit the mark when I’ve captured a balance between mood, look and feel.  You know you’ve succeeded when viewers sense the desert heat or the chill of a mountain snowfall. “Smith currently lives in Arizona with his wife, Tracy, who is also a painter.
