Richard Alan Nichols

His natural ability was given a strong foundation in traditional impressionism, this was brought forward during his tenure at the prestigious American Academy of Art in Chicago, His knowledge of his gift was honed with the tutelage under Masters Irving Shapiro and Ted Smuskiewicz and because of these Great Masters’ he was the recipient of numerous scholarships, and awards at such a young age.

Nichols’ tutelage from both Masters brought forth artist’s such as Nicolia Fechin and the Taos Founders during his time at the Academy, as some may say he was “weaned on that creativity“. So at his first opportunity he came upon that utopian vista covered in silvery green and purplish toned, and in viewing into the valley he said to himself “I understand”. Energy beyond expression.

Master Class with Pastel Artist, Dina Gregory

Master Class: How to Paint Plein Aire From Photos
Date: Saturday, November 19, 2011
Time: 9:00am to 5:00pm
Open to beginning to advanced students
Medium: Pastel

Dina will be teaching the master class in pastels but any medium is welcomed. She will do a demo emphasizing how to paint plein air and how to establish good values and a good composition. So, if you paint in other mediums, you will still get all the information on plein air painting and everything that it takes to make a good outdoor painting.Dina is a native Texan, who loves being out in nature. After working in different mediums, she discovered her favorite is pastels. Soft pastels work really well in plein air paintings. So, for the last several years, she has worked as a Texas plein air pastel artist. Nature is in constant change. Dina enjoys capturing this fleeting moment and the connection it poses between God, man and nature. Her favorite painting locations are Big Bend, Palo Duro Canyon, Enchanted Rock and her own Bosque county acreage.
A supply list will be provided if you might be thinking about the workshop and would like more information to make your decision.

  1. I am interested in attending Mr. Nichols class on Nov. 5th. There are a number of paintings I’ve started and gone no further, on which love to hear his recommendations. One is a water color and there are several pastels. Please let me know if the class is still open. I admire his loose approach and his use of color. Thanks, Barbara Rudd

  2. I attended the Chicago Academy of Art many years ago, and my father attended the American Academy. It was through him that I developed an interest in art. I look forward to meeting Mr. Nichols. Thanks, Barbara Rudd
