Guido Frick is truly an outdoor painter. “It might sound overstated, but I really consider nature as my original studio. It is because of this belief, that I claim the whole American West as my own personal studio”. This German-born painter lives half of the year in Europe and travels the other half almost exclusively through America´s western states. In the early 1980´s he met with famous instructor and painter Sergei Bongart, and still considers this encounter as the most influential experience he has ever had as a painter. “Sergei truly opened my eyes and showed me the way”. By the 1970′s, Guido had already studied with Professor Karel Hodr from Prague, a well-respected impressionist painter and art teacher throughout Europe.

Soon Guido´s work was shown in exhibits in Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, and most recently in England. He was published in “Maler sehen den Bodensee”, and in 1980 he won the Prix de Salon in Fontainbleau-Paris. “As a painter I do not like to be labeled. I am always crossing the borderline between impressionism and expressionism. In art there should be no border, no fences, no stop sign. I want to paint free and generous and be independent …I love the outdoors, in nature.” http://artmatch4u.com/artist912_frick.html

We are excited to announce Alexis’s “Painting Creatively from Photographs” Watercolor Workshop, September 12-14, 2013, Thursday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm

Workshop Description

Plan ahead for Alexis’ Watercolor workshop!

The focus here will be painting in a creative, personal, and expressive way from photographs -in other words freeing yourself from copying!!  Demos will include specific lessons designed to give students new ideas, methods and inspirations for working in this manner.  This is a good studio workshop and is designed for all levels of painters, from experienced beginners on up.  Painters in all media are welcome. Daily demos and critiques and ample student painting time.

Alexis Says:
During my demonstrations, I talk to the students at length while I paint or draw,  explaining what I am doing and why, what I am thinking, what I am deciding to do, what colors or techniques I am using, etc., and constantly inviting questions.  Critiques are designed to be positive and constructive experiences; during critiques I emphasize the students’ strengths and offer suggestions to help them improve their work.  During individual work time, I circulate among the students, offering help, suggestions, and information as needed.  When I am teaching, I am there 100% for the students.  I work very hard to give the students as much help, information, inspiration, and motivation as I can!

Alexis Lavine

Alexis Lavine has devoted the last two decades to watercolor painting. Her award winning paintings have been included in numerous juried and gallery exhibitions, and they hang in private and corporate collections throughout the country, as well as overseas. Alexis divides her time between painting in her studio and painting outdoors on location.

Alexis is an enthusiastic art instructor, who teaches painting and drawing classes and workshops.  She gives her students a sound background in technique and esthetics, encourages them to express their individuality through their art, and helps them to relax and enjoy their artistic pursuits.

Alexis’ watercolors are full of luminous color,  rich shadows, and beautifully drawn shapes.  With meticulous attention to composition, she crafts paintings that are descriptive and yet expressive, realistic and yet abstract.  She lives and paints in central North Carolina, except during the winter, when she migrates to the Virgin Islands and paints lots of palm trees!

Plan ahead for Kathleen Cook’s, PSA summer workshop as Kathleen returns to Amarillo!

Please join Amarillo Art Institute as we welcome Kathleen, a pastel painter of color and light! A product of Amarillo High School, graduated from Amarillo College in 1969, and is considered one of America’s extraordinary pastel artists. We are excited as Kathleen returns to Amarillo to teach.

A professional artist for more than 40 years, Cook’s artwork has been featured on several magazine covers and in galleries throughout the nation. She has won numerous juried competitions. Kathleen writes, ‘I have been an artist for a long time and have grown in my understanding of what this life path means. An artist needs two lifetimes, one just to acquire the skills of learning the language of artistic expression…the How’s. How to see color, how to draw & paint, how to use the supplies. The second lifetime, and most important-I think, is trying to discover what we are trying to say with these abilities. It is not enough, to just have dexterity with media—one must have something to say…the Why’s & What’s. Why am I interested in this subject, what do I want others to know, what are my feelings that I am trying to express. The Why’s & What’s are limitless and unique for each artist…and they change as we mature as people, as we experience the joys and sorrows of human life.’
