Michelle Chrisman Plein Air Workshop

Plein Air Painting with Palette Knife in Oils
3-day Workshop
with Michelle Chrisman
Contemporary Colorist Painter
May 18th – 20th
$250 per student

This is a workshop you will not want to miss if you are a plein air artist.  We are excited to welcome Michelle to our wonderful community.  I hope you will come out and join us!

All levels of oil painters welcome: beginner to advanced

ARTIST’S STATEMENT: I love the visual beauty of New Mexico & the West.  I am a Contemporary Colorist & Modernist.  What excites me most about painting is “seeing” the abstract shapes & patterns in the visual world.  I paint  mostly
“en plein air,” painting the figure & landscape from life.
I am an Impressionist & Expressionist.
I strive to remain grounded in the principals of
“how the visual world works,” while at the same time,
responding emotionally
(and viserally) to the beauty of the visual world that I am
capturing in paint!
The medium of oil paint is also very important to me
- letting the medium speak, and not being afraid of the
calligraphy of impasto painting.

Open Studio every Monday night

Open Studio is an opportunity for all artists at every level to work from a live model. The live model is in one pose for the entirety of each session. The figure presents many technical problems – form, structure, foreshortening and so on – so is wonderful training, and also allows the artist to display their skill. The professional model is fully clothed, except on the second Monday of every month when a professional nude model is present. Open Studio is every Monday night of the year (except for holidays) from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. Open Studio is not a class, club, or workshop. There is no registration required.   The fee for studio time each week is $10 per artist.  The fee is $15 per artist on the second Monday.  The fees pay for the model every week.  Easels are available, bring your own supplies.  Please contact Amarillo Art Institute at 806-354-8802 or director@amarilloartinstitute.org with any questions.

We are presently considering development of a figure drawing/life drawing class as artists have shown interest.  This would be an opportunity to work from a live nude professional model.  It is not a club, class or workshop.  There is no instructor present. It would be in a traditional academic format with gesture poses, several 20-minute poses and possibly 30-minute poses.
Figure drawing, also called Life Drawing, is drawing the naked human form. Figure drawing has always been the cornerstone of artistic training, but is also popular with amateur as well as professional artists. Stripped of the cultural baggage of clothing,  the nude figure can express every aspect of humanity, however life class is not the place for ‘pushing boundaries’ or risque poses. So, when you attend a life drawing class, you are participating in a centuries-old artistic tradition. You might like to visit an art gallery and observe the many classical nudes in painting and sculpture before you attend your first life drawing class. A gallery here in Sunset Art Galleries of Amarillo that you can visit is chrisjohnsonfineart.com. The format of the life-drawing class will be with a nude model in several poses through the allotted class time.  This class will require a monthly prepaid commitment of $15 per artist per session ($50 per month if prepaid).  This class will possibly meet during the spring and summer months. 12 student maximum.  We are forming this class dependent on artists’ input. Please contact Amarillo Art Institute at 806-354-8802 or director@amarilloartinstitute.org with any questions.
