Adult Classes

20 Feb

March 10-March 31
Instructor – Brian Guffey
Mondays 3pm-6pm
$135 for members
$150 for non-members

Join us to explore printmaking with techniques that will be fun, creative and informative. This is a very hands-on class that will explore relief prints, monoprints, collagraphs and screenprinting. The approach of this class will be to produce prints without the need of expensive equipment that sometimes makes creating work in the home and studio setting difficult. In the 4 weeks, we will cover tools, inks, paper, plate preparation, registration, printing processes and print qualities. Materials for the first prints will be provided in the first class, and students of all skill levels will be able to learn and grow in this class.

Relief printing consist of carving or removing material from your printing matrix. The remaining surface will be inked and a print pulled straight from that surface. Popular materials for this are linoleum, wood, rubber and formica.

Monoprinting is a wonderful painterly approach to printmaking that consists of taking a smooth surface and applying inks or paint to the surface and pulling a print from the freeform matrix you produced. This can be done on just about any surface as long as it is smooth, but the best options are usually acrylic, glass and metal.

Collagraphy utilizes adding to a plate in order to create a repeatable image, as opposed to other methods that use a removal of the surface (such as relief printing) to create the image. This is largely considered the ‘found object’ attempt at printmaking.

Screenprinting consists of passing the ink through a screen that is partially blocked out to only leave the image open on the screen. Traditional methods used varnishes and lacquers to make a solid matrix, but the process now includes photo emulsions and blockout films that create a crisp, professional image that can be reused.

A new series of 4-week introductory classes priced at $125 with all supplies included!
